Aicha Mohsen said that the state has the right to decide how this region will be developed. But her concerns are in line with those expressed by the Kurdish community in Europe and the United States, which she said is struggling to figure out how to fight the Islamic State in Syria. In this case, she said, the Kurds in Syria can’t use weapons they find on Syrian army, or else their community is at risk.

“It’s a very big risk because Kurds are not used of weapons from outside,” she said. If the Kurds in the area can’t get their arms and ammunition from the local government, the community will get the same type of support from outside.

Her worries come just days after the head of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, who represents about 100,000 people in the SDF, said Kurdish forces will not use weapons they find in areas controlled by the Islamic State. Gen. Talal Al-Binali, who represents a wide swath of northern Syria under the umbrella of the SDF, met with senior officials from the Kurdish community.

“It’s not the SDF that will provide weaponry. They have provided hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of weapons from Turkey to the SDF. And so there won’t be any PKK-KDP-PUK arms in the region.”

However, U.S. officials told Yahoo News last week that the Pentagon would provide military support to the Kurdish forces, as ISIS has been attempting to eliminate one of the Islamic State’s major strongholds in Syria.
